As a sex worker, especially one involved in the production and distribution of digital porn, you get used to people making excuses for not paying for porn, the most common being that it’s “free,” and should remain as such. Here’s where they’re wrong:
Free porn does not exist!
Porn performers are paid by studios at a flat rate per scene. This rate varies depending on the prestige and experience of the performer, the nature of the scene being filmed, and any negotiations made between the performers’ agents and hiring parties. This is a one-time transaction for the scene with zero royalties. so no matter how many times you watch your favorite porn video online, the actors starring in them won’t be getting any richer.
Meanwhile, free amateur porn usually involves videos that have been voluntarily uploaded to a video hosting platform, likely by the film’s subjects or its cameramen. In the best-case scenario, you’ll be consuming a consensual scene between two adults who are getting off to the act just as much as you are. On the other hand, the worst-case scenario can get much more sinister, and even downright criminal.
People Must Understand That Free Porn is Not Free
In the fall of 2022, Christopher Johnson, a 30-year-old man from Florida, was charged with lewd and lascivious battery of a 15-year old girl who had gone missing almost a year before his arrest. Sexually explicit images of the underage girl’s assault had been posted on several websites including the mecca of porn itself: Pornhub. Sites like Pornhub, unfortunately, don’t require age verification for a basic profile that you can upload videos from unless you intend on monetizing your views by becoming site-verified.
Even in cases where amateur scenes feature of-age adults, unless the profile is verified, you never know where the clips really come from–a spurned ex-lover, an Internet troll, or even a catfish account could be behind your favorite beat-off material. This constitutes revenge porn, and it’s only becoming more of a problem as online media gets more and more popular. Revenge porn is most often used to punish the performer in some way, whether it’s by embarrassing them and leaking an otherwise paid-for product, blackmailing them, or doxxing them, thereby placing them in potentially life-threatening danger. This isn’t just a dangerous jerk move, though. It’s a crime that can land offenders up to two years in prison.
Think About if For a Minute; FREE PORN?
To be perfectly frank, the free porn argument is objectively absurd, especially in a society that pays for practically all other forms of entertainment. In fact, free porn didn’t become the “norm” until the advent of widespread Internet access, circa just a couple of decades ago. With this in mind, the best course of action is, naturally, to pay for your porn! Independent performers cater to all kinds of tastes, and porn comes in all forms and flavors! There’s more opportunity for customization, so you can get exactly the scene you’re looking for without visiting a double-digits page on your usual tube site.
And if you insist on getting your fix free of charge?
The good news is that there are ethical ways to watch free porn! Like I mentioned earlier, site-verified models on platforms like Pornhub have to upload their identification and provide consent each time they upload. So they’ll benefit directly from your view at no cost to you.
The free porn epidemic is merely a symptom of a much larger problem: the ongoing stigmatization and dehumanization of sex workers. Simply paying for your porn won’t save all of us, or the world, but you will be taking your views away from the criminals who are responsible for the laws and social media soapboxes that are getting us harassed and de-platformed in the first place. So that counts for something, right?
If you agree share this on your social media channels.
