On July 15, the world of pornography will be changed forever, and not necessarily, many sex workers fear, in a good way.
UK is taking a big step to keep pornography out of the hands of underage children. They have decided that the solution to much of the problem is going to be to block their access to online porn sites. How are they going to do this? Age verification. Age verification is nothing new to the sex industry. To sign up as a webcam model or to become a porn star, the model or actress has to first prove that they are of legal age to be involved with such a business. This is accomplished, in the online world, by having the model take a clear picture of their ID, then a picture of them holding the ID. Even prostitutes who work at brothels and models who pose nude in magazines have to show their ID and, quite possibly, a second form of identification.
So what is this new law about then? All clients of the sex industry will now have to prove their age through an age verification process just like the models do. It is unclear which process they are going to choose, but there are two ideas being discussed. One way is to have them verify the same way models do; by either taking a picture with their IDs, or by scanning their ID. The second notion floating around is that a “Porn Pass” will need to be bought at a physical location and have their ID checked there. So what are sex workers worried about?
The biggest fear is that the process will be considered too lengthy or inconvenient for a potential client. Some clients might feel too embarrassed or shy and will refuse to buy a “porn pass” at a physical location. How far will someone have to travel to get to a location that sells the passes? Sex workers also fear the rules of advertising their work, as well. Think of all the ad pop-ups promising hookups with a hot MILF in your area, or the chat bubble pop-ups with a barely legal teen wanting to chat with you right now! With the new “Porn Ban”, all these ads will disappear to protect the eyes and minds of little ones.
There are so many mixed feelings about this law even with the actual sex workers; many are single mom’s looking for an income. While they understand why this is happening and even appreciate it, they still have to look at it on the business end. How is this going to affect their income? Many think that this law is going to create unsafe conditions for many. If they are not able to make enough online, they will move to the streets. Some may have to choose to go to an establishment and get taken advantage of by cheap, abusive bosses.
When will the ban reach your country? What are your thoughts?
